Most of us, when asked “Who are you?”, reach for the easy answer our name, our job title, maybe our family role. But that answer barely scratches the surface of what the question is really asking.
The deeper version of that question the one worth sitting with is this: What do I stand for? What excites me? What discourages me, and why? Am I living the life I actually want?
These aren’t questions you answer once and move on from. They evolve with you. The values you hold at 25 may look very different at 45, and that’s not a failure that’s growth. But the people who live with the greatest sense of purpose and satisfaction are those who keep returning to the question honestly, at every stage of life.
So where do you start?
Start with your patterns. Look at the decisions you make when no one is watching. Look at what you defend, what you avoid, and what genuinely brings you joy. Those patterns reveal your values more honestly than any personality quiz ever could.
Ask yourself:
- Do my friendships reflect who I want to be?
- Do I lead or follow, and does my answer align with what I actually want?
- When adversity hits, do I move toward it or away from it?
None of this is about judgment. It’s about awareness. Because once you know who you are truly are your decisions become clearer, your relationships become more meaningful, and your life becomes more intentional.
The question isn’t meant to overwhelm you. It’s meant to set you free.
